We are at Port Jervis, NY on January 28, 1961, to witness manifest #98 arriving at this New York Division crew change point behind the former Erie’s last set of F-7s. It is of passing interest to note that three units of this 6000hp combo were originally delivered as an A-B-A passenger set, the 807, and a second B unit was acquired in early 1952 to convert the locomotive to freight service. This was owing to the 1951 delivery of fourteen E-8s obviating the need for passenger Fs. In fact, a contemporary EMD advertisement featured the 807 as a passenger engine! Notice that the only indication of the merger in this shot is the renumbering of the 713A to 7131 (713A,B,C,D became 7131, 7132, 7133 and 7134 at the time of the October 1960 merger even though partner DL&W had no locomotives numbered in the 700 series). Also evident in the photo is the 7131’s obvious need of repainting.

Photograph from Trackside Erie to Conrail with Robert F. Collins.
