Birmingham was the steel center of the South and the L&N’s transportation network helped make this possible. SW1200 2294 was moving a cut of loads out of the Alabama Byproduct Company’s coke plant in Tarrant, just outside of Birmingham. The location of this December 1975 photograph was near Boyles Yard. Located north of Birmingham, this facility was the biggest yard on the division and it covered over 250 acres. The Atlantic Coast Line also operated into Boyles Yard via 16 miles of trackage rights over the L&N between Parkwood and Boyles. (Bill Folsom, Bob Wilt Collection)
